Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, and it offers a wide range of choice for sailing and motor yacht charters, mainly focused on two areas: the north-east and south-west. Due to its very jagged coastline and its numerous islands and islets, the northern side offers a great variety of landscapes and plenty of shelter from the mistral, which blows constantly, making this area ideal for sailing yacht holidays. Let’s start by looking at the glamorous Costa Smeralda, with Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo and dream villas perched high up on the hillsides: the place to come for a jet-set experience in Insta-worthy surroundings. This is the departure point for a tour of northern Sardinia, sailing around the magical Maddalena archipelago, with 7 islands that form a natural amphitheatre. They’re packed with secret bays and coves set among crystal clear seas and postcard-perfect sunsets. Santo Stefano, Maddalena, Spargi and Caprera, then slightly further north Santa Maria and Razzoli; from here we can reach three French islands just off Corsica: Lavezzi, Cavallo and Isola Piana. If we head southwards from the Costa Smeralda, going via Golfo Aranci or setting off from Olbia, we can reach the islands of Tavolara and Molara. The former has exceptional sea bottoms that are perfect for scuba diving (with sealife, fish and even shipwrecks to explore). The southern side of the island has pearl-white beaches and, once you’ve moored, you can head inland for some beautiful hikes. The southern side of Sardinia has a less glamorous, more chilled-out vibe; but it’s unspoilt and very much dominated by nature, sometimes totally wild and untouched. Setting off from the marinas in Cagliari or from the picturesque village of Carloforte (within easy reach of the airport), you can cruise along a splendid coastline for around 50 miles, with exposure to the mistral wind. The islands of San Pietro and Sant'Antioco, the sand dunes around Porto Pino and Capo Zafferano, the beach of Chia with its sparkling clear water, the Nora archaeological park... these are just some of the wonders in store for you.
Sardinia offers a vast range of options for charter holidays. If you want to rent a boat independently and are a confident sailor with your own boating licence, then what could be better than a bareboat charter in Sardinia. You’ll be free to cruise around, taking your pick of islands, villages, bays and inlets in utter freedom, whether you prefer to travel by motor boat, sailing boat or catamaran, all from the most prestigious shipbuilders. For example, the main brands available for a sailing boat charter in Sardinia are: Jeanneau yachts (Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 319, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 33i, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 419, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 449, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 490), Beneateau yachts (Beneteau Oceanis 31, Beneteau Oceanis 35, Beneteau Oceanis 35.1, Beneteau Oceanis 42.1, Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, Beneteau Oceanis 51.1). For catamarans, the most sought-after brand is undoubtedly Lagoon Charter (Lagoon 40, Lagoon 42, Lagoon 46, Lagoon 52F). If, on the other hand, you’d rather leave the helm to someone else, our partners also offer boats and catamarans to rent with professional skippers. That way you can make the most of an expert to guide and advise you on your quest for the most unforgettable beauty spots, or you can work out an itinerary together beforehand. For the holiday of a lifetime why not go for a luxury yacht charter: your boat or catamaran won’t just come with a skipper, but with a complete crew including a steward to ensure the most comfortable onboard experience. They will organise breakfasts, aperitifs, cocktails, dinners, and anything else you might require. If you don’t possess a boating licence, not to worry – some charter companies will offer Sardinia boat charters without a licence, under current Italian law; naturally, they will need to check your past sailing experience. Feel free to contact our team for further information!
Olbia and Cagliari are the main charter bases in Sardinia for renting a yacht. Olbia serves the north-eastern coast of the island, and can be reached by ferry (from Livorno, Piombino, Civitavecchia and Genoa) or by plane from many airports in Western Europe. Once you’ve arrived it’s just a short transfer to the Costa Smeralda, a place that’s always been synonymous with style and luxury. From there you can set off on your charter from luxurious Porto Cervo, or from Portisco, which has a town centre with plenty of facilities for yachtsmen, including shops and supermarkets. Further north, you can depart from Cannigione, Palau or Santa Teresa di Gallura. Alternatively, you can choose the island of La Maddalena as your base: it takes a little longer to get there by ferry from Palau, but from the very first evening of your Sardinian charter you’ll be right in the middle of the splendid Maddalena archipelago, crowned by the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands, for a dream sailing yacht or motor boat cruise. Cagliari is the second-largest charter base in Sardinia, as well as being the region’s lively, historic capital city. It can be reached by plane or ferry, and makes the ideal starting point for a yachting holiday in the south of Sardinia. The best sailing route for cruising around southern Sardinia is a One Way Cagliari - Carloforte or a One Way Carloforte - Cagliari. There is limited availability for One Way charters so don’t hesitate to contact our team at ItalyCharter to get all our best offers.
