The Costa Smeralda is famously beautiful and chic. Its most legendary resort is Porto Cervo – the playground of the rich and famous with glitzy nightlife, restaurants and boutiques. It marks the beginning of a jagged coastline rich in bays and coves, where the sea is a bewitching blend of emerald and turquoise. Sailing in Sardinia is particularly delightful: Liscia di Vacca in the north, then the Bay of Pevero towards the south; and the Spiaggia del Principe, with its pristine white sand framing a deep, sheltered bay surrounded by greenery and granite rocks. Here we recommend mooring in the evening, and waking at dawn to enjoy the sunrise and make the most of the beach before the tourists take over. Lastly, if you head south and sail around Capriccioli point, it’s not far from there to the exclusive little harbour at Cala Volpe. The Maddalena archipelago splays out to the north east of Costa Smeralda, and is within easy reach of Porto Cervo or the towns of Cannigione, Palau and Santa Teresa. The main islands in the archipelago are Santo Stefano, Maddalena, Caprera, Spargi and Razzoli, along with many other, smaller islands that are no less beautiful. All this is contained within a relatively small area, offering an unending sequence of breathtaking landscapes and crystal clear waters. From there, it is a short crossing over the Strait to the small French islands off Corsica, Lavezzi, Cavallo, Isola Piatta and a few miles further, the scenic approach to Bonifacio. On your Sardinia sailing charter you can set off from Olbia along another stunning stretch of the Sardinian coast: Golfo Aranci, Punta Molara, San Teodoro. In the middle of it is the island of Tavolara, a paradise for scuba diving and hiking; and the island of Molara, in the middle of the marine reserve. The south-western side of this island offers beautiful natural pools, with a totally transparent, shallow expanse of sea that the WWF classes among the world’s most beautiful marine ecosystems.
The southern part of Sardinia offers untouched landscapes and, again, superbly clear water. The most popular area for Sardinian sailing holidays is the stretch of coast between Cagliari and Carloforte, which can be covered in the course of a one-week charter holiday. The landscape here is calmer, quieter and sometimes wild: we leave behind the cliffs of the north, and find a gentler coastline with more vegetation. After the capital city, we come to Pula, then the strip of bright white sand at Chia, and the Nora archeological park. Helped along by the ever-present mistral wind, we sail around the south-western tip of Sardinia towards Porto Pino, Sant'Antioco and lastly the charming fishing village of Carloforte on the Isola di San Pietro.

For example, you can set sail from the sumptuous, jet-set marinas at Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo, or Porto Quatu, and cruise over to the Maddalena archipelago. The islands and turquoise sea around them are stunning, but the strong north-westerly winds, shallow sea bottoms and rocks mean that an expert skipper is needed for safe sailing here. Luxury yacht skippers are expert professionals who know this area well. They’ll be able to suggest the most spectacular bays and coves. You can drop anchor, dive in and enjoy some snorkelling before climbing back on board for lunch or drinks and snacks prepared by the chef. If you’re looking for a more varied sailing charter in Sardinia with the focus on sailing itself, allowing you discover a longer section of the coast, you can opt for a one-way charter in Sardinia. You pick up your boat from one marina and drop it off at a different location. There are two routes to choose from: Cagliari-Carloforte, covering the south of the island, and Alghero-Carloforte, sailing along the west coast. The southern route can be approached from either direction, either starting from the capital or from the magical fishing village of Carloforte on the Isola di San Pietro. In the course of a week you’ll be able to visit the beautiful Isola Sant’Antioco; Porto Pino; the impossibly white strips of sand at Chia, the Nora archeological park - and why not stop off in lively Cagliari, where you can hit the shops and visit the splendid old town huddled around the castle. Alghero and Carloforte are the bases for the itinerary along the west coast. It’s a very long route, giving you the chance to unfurl the sails and hold your own against the stiff mistral wind, along a stunningly beautiful coastline that is for the most part unspoilt, with a lot less tourism than the rest of Sardinia. Leave behind the bustling beaches of Alghero (which does, however, have some charming, sheltered little bays in the surroundings), and head south towards Bosa: it’s worth mooring at Bosa Marina for an excursion inland to visit the delightful town, its rainbow-coloured houses clustered beneath the Castello Malaspina. Continuing southwards along a completely unpopulated stretch of coast, with several coves, we reach the area of Oristano: here you’ll find the Sinis peninsula with its immaculate beaches; the wild and uninhabited island of Mal di Ventre. If you take care handling the constant winds and shallow sea bottoms, sailing here is a truly thrilling experience. Then there is the archaeological site at Tharros, as well as the Torre dei Corsari, the beach at Is Piscinas, and lastly your final destination, Carloforte. This itinerary can also be covered in the opposite direction, but as there is just a small fleet available, we recommend you contact our team for further information.
